Dear Editor,

It was a disheartening moment today when we learned that Markham-Unionville’s Conservative MP Michael Ma, was the latest recently-elected Member of Parliament to announce he was crossing the floor – quitting the party he ran under and was elected under, and joining another party on Thursday, December 11th.

In his case, Ma is joining his main opponent – The Liberals, a party he ran against because he did not agree with their policies or leadership. He could have ran initially as a Liberal but chose not to.  He even had a photo taken with Conservative Leader Poilievre the night before.

His moves on Thursday were highly unethical.  Chinese culture values Honour greatly. What Ma has done is highly dishonourable.  Let’s hope voters remember.

Do his actions reflect instructions from the majority of voters in his riding?  Unlikely, as the election just happened half a year ago. Like the Nova Scotia MP who did likewise a few weeks ago, Ma was targeted and courted by Prime Minister Carney – and no doubt offered benefits – for quitting the Conservatives and joining the Liberals.

Given that Ma defeated his Liberal opponent this past April in the election by less than 2,000 votes, why doesn’t Ma quit and allow his Liberal opponent Mr. Yuen to take his spot?  Our federal system does not allow for that.  Municipal election rules do allow for such things.

What happens if Ma is defeated at election time under the Liberal banner?  No doubt Carney has offered him a comfortable, well-paid government or party or private sector job in that case.

Canada’s democracy works by electing representatives – MPs.  They are first and foremost supposed to represent the interests of the riding, not the individual person elected.

“All floor-crossing MPs should be required to do only one ethical thing – sit out the remainder of their term as MP as an Independent. They can switch parties during the following election, and

take their chances with voters” says Dominion Party of Canada Leader Brad Harness. The new party is pushing for significant improvements to Canada’s electoral laws.
